Accessible Yoga and Surfing: How to Make Them Available to Everyone

Let's demystify the world of surf and yoga

Stepping onto a yoga mat or a surfboard can feel like entering a world shrouded in mystery and intimidation. Over the years, a certain image of surfers and yogis has taken hold—a portrayal of individuals with perfectly fit and flexible bodies effortlessly performing advanced poses or riding waves on super sleek boards. If you scroll through your Instagram feed for just 30 seconds, this is the predominant image that pops up.

Unfortunately, this narrow representation often leads to a lack of diversity and body empowerment, and an abundance of comparison and resistance when it comes to starting a yoga or surf practice. Many feel they don't "fit the standards" and are discouraged from getting involved.

Well, let us tell you something:

You can be a "good surfer" and ride a 7.6 board in 1-2ft waves.

You can be a "good yogi" without being able to do a full lotus pose. (Yours truly here…)

Surfing and yoga are practices that require consistency and the willingness to let go of ego. It's okay to fall, to have a less energetic practice, or to have limitations in your body. What truly matters is committing to the practice. Don't be afraid of how you look, and don't compare yourself to others. Just breathe, practice, and embrace the journey.

Embrace the process of creating good habits and finding a routine that suits you. Don't let ego hold you back or make you feel insecure. Let your surf and yoga routine become an unstoppable force of freedom, authenticity, and love. Keep moving your body, connecting with your breath, and keep paddling and falling. Everything will gradually fall into place with time and practice.

Recognizing the need for inclusivity and breaking down these barriers, we founded Salty Yogis. We've heard too many times, "I'm not flexible enough," "I'm not strong enough," "I don't know anything about surf or yoga," and we want to tell you that none of that is true: You are enough.

Everything will come in due time. You just need to take that first step onto the board or onto the yoga mat. Our mission at Salty Yogis is to make surf and yoga accessible to everyone, regardless of their background, bodily limitations, or past experiences.

The only thing that truly matters is your willingness to start and fully engage—body, mind, and soul.

Our online yoga and surf drills, tips, and classes are here to help you enter or explore these amazing worlds. Let us guide you on this transformative journey, where you can discover the joy and fulfillment that both surf and yoga can bring. Together, we can redefine the narrative, embrace diversity, and create a community that celebrates every individual's unique path.
